Hello Old Friend

I was looking forward to my speedwork this morning.  I even rolled out of bed when the alarm went off.  The legs were still a little heavy, but I worked through the warmup and hit the park for a session of 10×400 m in 86 seconds with 400 m jogging recoveries.  Here’s how it went:

400 m in 83 s

400 m in 83 s

400 m in 84 s

400 m in 87 s

400 m in 88 s

400 m in 85 s

400 m in 86 s

400 m in 84 s

400 m in 86 s

400 m in 85 s

So, it all looks pretty good.  I only missed my time on two of the 10 intervals.  It was more difficult than it looked.  After the third interval, I had to walk part of my recovery and I walked part of every recovery after that.  In fact, I was planning on quitting after 4 intervals, but with Alice planning to do 6 intervals this evening, I told myself I had to at least do 6.  Once I had 6, I figured I may as well do 8, which is how many I was doing back in April.  Once I got 8, I figured two more wouldn’t kill me.  So, that’s how I ended up doing all 10 intervals.

I was exhausted afterward.  I drank, stretched, showered, ate, and then laid on the couch watching the Tour de France.  Fortunately, I was able to actually get some work done on my laptop at the same time.  It worked out to be a pretty productive morning.  Kudos to Mr. Armstrong for paying attention and getting into that breakaway with Team Columbia in the latter half of the race.  Major Kudos to Team Columbia for sticking it to the rest of the teams and creating an exciting finish.

  1. Anything under 90 for a 400 is HARD. You did great, esp. for doing ten of them!

The weather in Gatlinburg has always been wonderful for running every time I’ve been there, whether it’s in January or July. It was in the 70s this time, no humidity….perfect running weather.

I’m sure there might be some decent trails somewhere, but I’ve only been on ones with lots of rocks and big roots. BUT hiking cross country would make for some decent cardio!

  2. Great job on the 400s! Jogging the recoveries makes that workout even harder! Those are some great times!

  3. I’m exhausted just reading about these. Whew! Great run!

And thanks for the words of encouragement os last weekend’s 16 miler. The last time I trained for a maraton, I was still green behind the ears and blew up on a 14 miler. After that anything long was very intimidating. The 16 milers last weekend did a lot to restore my confidence.

  4. i almost always have to talk myself into more repeats/finishing out the assigned amounts. always feels good after, that’s for sure. nice job barreling through the 10, all looks good to me.
