Another week is in the books. With both Alice and Richie out of town this week, I ran all my runs solo and at my own pace – although Richie was still in town on Monday and offered some encouragement during my treadmill intervals. Here’s how the week went:
Monday AM: 200 and 800 m intervals on the treadmill for total 7.5 miles
Tuesday AM: 8 miles at 8:08 pace
Wednesday AM: 4 miles Easy + 2.5 miles sub 7:00 + .5 miles easy + 1 mile in 6:44 + .25 miles easy + .25 miles in 1:35 + Easy to total 10 miles
Thursday AM: 3 miles at 8:20 pace
Thursday PM: 4 miles at 7:58 pace
Friday AM: 3 miles at 7:51 pace
Friday PM: 4 miles at 7:57 pace
Saturday AM: 14 miles at 8:23 pace
Total 53.5 miles.
All in all, it was a good week. There were a couple of milestones. In the same short run on Friday evening, I passed 1000 miles for the year and 500 miles in my second pair of Adidas Supernova Sequence. Luckily, I stopped by the store earlier in the week to pick up my fourth pair so the second pair can be safely retired now.
On another note, my Wednesday threshold run did not go quite as planned. I was supposed to get 5 miles at 7:03, but I only got halfway there before having to recover. The threshold pace runs are my main training weakness right now and I think it’s largely mental. I think if I can breakthrough on these workouts, then I’m in store for a series of very good races between September and February. If anybody has any psychology advice, let me know.
It’s up to 60 miles next week!
My team used to do a ton of sports psychology stuff in college but of course i cant remember half of it now. Maybe try slowly increasing your tempo runs from 2 miles to 3 and so on. then you know mentally you can do the lower distances so what is one more mile? have a good week!
well you know my thoughts on pesky threshold! it’s tough. hopefully we’ll both get stronger (mentally and physically) instead of feeling ‘beat up’ about being off pace.
you were under pace though, maybe had you held back a little more?
500 miles on a pair of shoes! i don’t feel i can stretch mine out that long anymore. (or maybe i am easily suckered into buying myself new pairs)
WTG Brian! 53 plus mile is a great week. I just finished a 55 mile week, and I am in awe of anyone who can do that week in and week out!
Heck – I’m about 2 weeks behind you in the hunt for 1,000 miles. Just turned 930 this past week. Congrats! That a lot of miles!
Nice job on the mileage. I’m impressed that you got 500 miles out of those shoes.
Wow. Congrats on a really consistent weak. Your Wednesday run made me tired just reading it.
Nice week! Have to say, I’m jealous you were able to run solo this week, at “your” pace. I haven’t been able to do that in over a month. I miss “my” runs! That sounds so whiny, I know…
Tempo sometimes runs scare the crap out of me because it’s a fast pace so suddenly. I MUCH prefer progression or Kenyan runs and adding 2-3 miles of what would be tempo at the end of those runs. Just not calling it a tempo is good for me…and not setting a specific pace in mind, too. I just watch my Garmin like a hawk during those last few miles and try to pick it up each one. Usually this is better for my ego than a failed tempo attempt.
Awesome work dude– You are really pushing it!
I wish I could give you advice– but I got nothin! You are soo much farther in training than me– I look to you for the advice! 🙂
